 Floating wind turbines StatoilHydro and Siemens installed the world’s first large-scale floating wind turbines. The turbine is located approximately 12 kilometers from the Norwegian coast at a depth of about 220 meters. The project was designed by Hywind StatoilHydro, but Siemens supplied 2,3MW wind turbines SWT-2.3-82 with a rotor diameter of 82 m. Over the next two years, the floating wind turbine will be thoroughly tested to ensure complete analysis of this innovative concept. Turbina Hywind will be connected to the local grid and is expected to start producing energy in mid-July of 2009. Installing Hywind designed to operate in water depth of 120 to 700 m and this may open up some new opportunities for offshore wind turbine technology. Continue reading
